Mak-sei

What is Mak-sei? It is a passion project turned into an interactive world. This project started in late 2021 as a way to expand my portfolio with various concept art of different locations. I ultimately became very invested in the worldbuilding, and am now creating story projects within the world to further expand it.

Wiki Website

Originally this started as a google document page but as I gradually added to it over time, it became too much to keep track of. I had to find a way to organize everything in a way my brain could use as a organized digital notebook, and what way to have an organized site other than a home-made wikipedia.

Concept art

I've created concept art for various things involved in the world, and am consistently trying to add more to it. This can be from things such as maps, locations, species, characters, plants, ect. All concept art on my concept art page is for Mak-sei.

Characters

Developing and designing characters is one of the things I enjoy doing the most. Character design is something I'm passionate about. I love telling stories with just the design of the characters, and giving them more depth as if they were real and had real stories. I love creating species and different concepts of creatures that don't exactly exist in our own world. One of the stories that is set in Mak-sei focuses on 4 characters, Clyde, Vex, Ophilia & Queen Ivarsha.

Story

My story as a whole focuses on queer and neurodivergent isolation, familial trauma, and the importance of found family. When a lone werewolf finally comes to terms with the loss of his family, a vampire refugee comes into town to turn his whole world upside down & change the course of his life forever. The story is mainly driven by the characters and their interactions with their peers, as I'm really curious on expanding the nuance in neurodivergent and queer isolation that is often lost in media. It follows a werewolf name Clyde, a vampire named vex, Ophilia the witch and Queen Ivarsha. Each character is a representation of different dynamics of isolation.
With Clyde's focusing on building your own toolset when you are not given one and to fend for yourself alone, as well as dealing with a traumatic familial loss. Vex's storyline focuses on themes of loss of identity, queer repression and self destructive isolation. Ophilia's is having a disability in an environment that isolates her, focusing on wanting to build ones community from isolation. Finally, the queens story focuses on the isolation of insecurity and ego and how manipulation and distrust can create false realities.

Illustration

Elvira, 2023

This painting was the longest painting I've ever worked on. It spanned over the course of 2 months, and over 35 hours of painting. The main challenge I wanted to try and learn with this is to try and make the most realistically rendered painting I've ever done of a character. This was a large challenge for me, because I'm a very big fan of texture and brushstrokes in painting, so having everything try to be realistic was difficult. The main things I would change in the future is the perspective of the room to try and make the scene be a bit more natural to her stance.

Girl in the water, 2020

This was a Painting I created as a study to try and learn values and color, as well as try to learn how to render. This was one of the paintings that really set me in the direction I am now, and inspired me to start to really get into digital painting and spending many hours on a singular painting. This was a real test on myself to try and spend more than just a couple of hours on a single piece, since I would often get frustrated and give up midway through. This piece taught me that Its more fun to sit and work on a piece and figure out what is and isn't working, rather than just starting over. I probably spent about 10 hours on this, and at the time, it was the longest I had ever spent on a painting. It will always hold a special place in my heart, as this piece kickstarted my love for the arts all over again.

End of the hall, 2021

I realized at the time I had only been doing portraits, and had a hard time painting backgrounds. This painting was created just to push myself out of that comfort zone and only focus on the environment. It also made me want to incorporate more story into a simple image, and study on how light reflects on simple surfaces. This was mostly a study on lighting and structure of an environment, but it was really fun trying to figure out texture on surfaces that aren't exactly smooth, and made me discover my love for textured brushes. This painting really pushed me to want to do more environmental paintings, and what I could do to create scenes for stories and characters.

Blood and Justice, 2022

This painting was created out of the motivation to make something to express my frustrations with those in power. This painting was put together and planned within the span of an hour, and painted for around 10. The main goal was to try and create angelic type of painting I haven't done before, blending texture along with my experimental rendering style. I really wanted to give this piece a mixture of emotions in one image, really trying to push meaning and story of a still image, along with experimenting with composition.

I give you fire, 2021

I really wanted to try and experiment with environments along with having the subject in the same setting. It also gave me an excuse to try and render fire, along with figuring out how to make a proper Field of view. This was one of the first paintings I really tried to branch out with many different elements I've never rendered before. This includes things like Fire and metal, along with a fabric with many little holes. One of the things i've learned through this process is how to structure the painting process for myself in a faster manner than before. I also really wanted to study atmospheric lighting and how to make it cohesive for the scene. This is still to this day one of the paintings I'm most proud of.

Zelda on the Beach, 2022

I was very determined to use tools I wasn't super familiar with with this painting. The main tool used for the entire painting was the lasso and the blur tool. One of the things that was a big struggle for me was the face for most of the painting. I had a hard time painting the features at first, but was able to get back in and fix it after analyzing it for a while. If I were to go back and change anything I would Redo the whole background as it doesn't feel Ideal for the painting. I'm very proud with how the rendering turned out, specifically with the shorts and the hands.

Summer cant be over!, 2021

This painting was a Color and value study that really helped me learn shading and color values. I really altered the colors of the reference image used, and color picked to help my brain learn and register colors and color theory. It was my first attempt at altering an image colors before hand, as previously I would alter the colors after they were already painted. This helped me really learn color theory, and how colors are related to each other in regards to shading and atmosphere. This painting really made me enjoy the harsh brush style that I had at that time. I really enjoyed using a textured digital brush, giving the color more of a rugged feel. It also made me have to learn more about between colors instead of just blending, and it made me realize I really do love the process of rendering.

Rhythm Kitchen, 2021

This painting was originally made for a contest. I really wanted to try and experiment with Blending and rendering, along with trying to make a compelling composition. On the down side, I didn't place at all for the contest. This painting was a big lesson for me, even if the lesson I learned was after the painting was completed. I was so dead set on winning this contest, that I talked myself into winning before the competition was even over. This painting forever changed how I view contests, as well as setting myself up to receive the outcomes. I am still proud of how it turned out, even if it didn't place.

Concept Art

Eye of Fir dúr

This is a location that I created when I started the creation of Mak-sei back in 2021. It is a radioactive wasteland concept from a failed weapon. The location is a mountainous region filled with a radioactive crater and lake. Many of the life within the eye thrives within the environment and has their own mutation physics. If you want to read more information on the Eye of Fir dúr, Click HERE!The first painting was created before the concept of the Eye was really developed. It actually sparked the idea of the location, and the second painting was created in 2022 after the Concept was more fully developed. In the first concept, It was my first attempt at trying to make a foggy location. I tried to do something simple and I believe it turned out like a pretty cool idea for a location. The second painting was really fun for me, as I really wanted to have fun with it and experiment with brushes like crazy!

Witches and Warlocks

Witches and Warlocks are both species in Mak-sei that are descendants from humans. They are the main reason the Eye of Fir dúr is a radioactive wasteland. Witches are also related to corvids, and Warlocks are related to amphibians. I plan to create more concepts of them in the future the more my stories develop.

Angel city

This painting was put together after coming up with the idea for the traveling angel city for Mak-sei. I was very inspired by a image of some clouds, and was just mostly originally using it as a cloud study. It gradually built to what it is now over the course of around 7-8 hours. I plan to create more concepts of it in the future as well. if your curious to learn more about the city you can click HERE!

Grey Demons

These are concept sketches of Grey demons, a underground species of demon that live mostly in caves and love to express themselves with color in their uv environments. I wanted to incorporate elements of queer alternative and scene culture, along with UV reactive wear to create outfits the grey demons would normally wear. I'm very into the concept of their communities, and hope to create concept art of it in the future as well.

Clyde's Home

These are concepts of a log cabin house of my werewolf character I am developing for my story. The first is what I originally conceptualized the inside would be, however the second images are more of trying to redesign the outside. I should have done the outside first, however I don't mind redoing it in the future and seeing the progress.

Blue Demons

Similar to the grey demons, but have their own traits that make them unique. These are some different designs for the various styles I thought would be around their environment. They often live in lush forested areas around mountainous and beach like areas that are rich in minerals & metals. I hope to expand on their concepts in the future as well. Vampire Empire

Before the idea of the vampire kingdom was fully set into place, I created a concept of something that would have fit the atmosphere I was trying to develop for it at the time. The first image is the original concept of the vampire kingdom, before the vampire kingdom was switched to a more fantasy Victorian gothic style.
The second and third image are the updated concepts for them I plan on rendering in the future. Since the empire separates the upper and lower class literally, they have an inner and outer city surrounded by the castle walls. The concepts are for a story I am developing, as the setting has a big impact in the story and its messaging.

Queen Ivarsha & Kishoh

These are some concept headshots I wanted to do of my main antagonist of my story, as well as her assistant/lover. I mainly wanted to experiment on developing different faces for each character. I hope to do dull body concepts of them eventually as the story progresses and develops. Queen ivarsha is a woman lost in her own insecurities as it slowly swallow's her whole, taking her assistant down with her in the process in their tragic yearning. She is the queen of the vampire kingdom. If you want to read more about them click HERE! and HERE!
